Sensing & connected devices
Exploring what should be measured, how and with what operational burden.
Edge, IoT & Data
Sensors, devices and connected equipment can reveal what is happening across a building, site, network or place. The value comes when that information is reliable, understandable and connected to a useful decision or action.
More than connected devices
An IoT system needs dependable connectivity, appropriate power, secure identity, sensible data handling, maintainable devices and a clear reason for collecting information in the first place.
We look across that chain, from the physical environment to the people or systems that need to respond.
Areas of work
Exploring what should be measured, how and with what operational burden.
Processing closer to the source where speed, resilience, bandwidth, privacy or local autonomy makes that useful.
Connecting devices and platforms through reliable interfaces, message flows and shared models.
Making the condition of systems and environments visible without creating another wall of unexplained alerts.
Connecting readings and events to locations, assets, infrastructure, people and wider place-based evidence.
Designing dashboards, rules, alerts and intelligent workflows around the people who need to make decisions.
Design for the real environment
Lab conditions are useful, but they are not the same as an exposed site, an old building, an intermittent connection or equipment that someone must maintain for years. Edge and IoT work should be designed around the real environment, including failure, support and replacement.
Security and restraint
Connected devices expand the system that must be understood and protected. We consider permissions, update paths, network boundaries, data minimisation and what happens when a component becomes unavailable.
Not everything needs to be connected. Part of good design is knowing what should remain simple.

Start with the decision or action the system needs to support.
